COMPLEX VARIABLES (SMT273314)
Course Description: The theory of complex variables is elegant and rich in applications. Also known as Complex Analysis, this is primarily a proofbased study of functions of a single complex variable. Complex variables enjoy a wide range of applications, which appear in engineering and the physical sciences. Complex Analysis also applies elegantly to other subfields of mathematics, such as Number Theory and Partial Differential Equations. This introduction to the theory and applications of complex variables include analytic functions, Riemann surfaces, complex integration, Taylor and Laurent series, residues, conformal mapping, harmonic functions, and Laplace transforms. The primary audience for this course is students who wish to concentrate in either mathematics or applied mathematics. Students interested in various fields which have a strong connection to this branch of mathematics (such as music theory, physics, chemistry, computer science, or the cognitive sciences) may also be interested in this course. Prior to enrolling in this course, students should be fluent in differential, integral, and multivariable calculus. These topics are usually covered in a threeterm calculus sequence. Students should also be fluent in the foundations of mathematics and mathematical proof: logic, methods of proof, sets, relations, and functions; this knowledge may be obtained from a course such as Discrete Mathematics, for example. Students should also be familiar with vector spaces, matrices and determinants; this knowledge can be obtained from a course such as Linear Algebra.
