Description: This one-credit course runs for only the first eight weeks of the term. Learn how information is stored and retrieved in electronic formats and learn the skills for information searching and finding, both in electronic databases and on the Internet. Topics include information gathering and organizing, storage and retrieval, extraction and evaluation, synthesizing, and collaborating and communicating using the Internet. By the end of the course, students will have worked with the ESC Library and Learning Resources web site, information services such as FirstSearch and Dialog, and other sources on the Internet. Assignments consist of a number of research exercises in a variety of subject areas, all designed as parts of an ongoing assignment to create a search strategy and complete a preliminary bibliography for a research project. Students will be able to apply principles learned in this course to research assigned in other courses.
