Juneteenth Event

Event Date(s): 06/12/2021
Event Time(s): 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Event Description: Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or African American Independence Day, was celebrated in the south beginning in 1866. The holiday is also called Jubilee Day or Liberation Day, and is now celebrated throughout the United States, on June 19, in commemoration of the end of the institution of slavery. The SUNY Empire State College Black Male Initiative is happy to celebrate Juneteenth one week early, with a lecture by Emeritus Professor Joseph Washington on the importance of jazz musicians in the creation of freedom and protest music. Following the lecture, we will enjoy a performance by the Jim Snidero Quartet featuring highlights of the era.
