Students from all Empire State College centers, units and programs are invited to participate. Attendance at and participation in the residency is an integral and required part of each residency course. Before the residency, all participants will complete a short reading or readings and/or view a documentary that focuses on this year's theme. That brief assignment will form the basis of our discussions of the theme at the residency plenary sessions. Each student also will do additional academic study under the direction of the tutor. At the time of registration, each student will select one of the residency course offerings for in-depth study in the fall 2011 term. Credit is possible at either the undergraduate or graduate level, except for courses listed as introductory only.

Participation Required:
  • Completing a common reading related to the residency theme,
  • A commitment to complete that reading and assigned course work before the residency,
  • Formal enrollment in the selected course after consultation with the student’s primary mentor, as the residency itself is part of the credit-bearing studies,
  • Attendance and active engagement at the residency.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the residency. However, this year we will again offer vans from regions with sufficient student interest, as well as an informal car-pooling effort, which students have found helpful.

A list of contract studies available through the residency is available online. The residency fee is $140, inclusive of meals and lodging (tuition and college fees are separate). Space at the residency is limited; participants will be accepted in order of their registration. The optional preresidency learning experiences (Oct. 10) require an additional $55 fee.

Registration deadline is Sept. 9, 2011
