New General Education Policy Effective July 1, 2010

Effective July 1, 2010 Empire State College has approved a revision to the college’s general education requirement for bachelor’s degree students. Students must still complete a minimum of 30 credits in general education. These credits are to be distributed among at least 7 of the 10 required areas, which must include both mathematics and basic communication. Students will select five different content areas from the remaining eight. Requirements for the associate degree do not change.

We are alerting you to this change in case you want to rethink any general education choices as you prepare to register for the fall term.

The revised policy provides bachelor’s degree students with greater flexibility and choice compared to the previous policy, which required that bachelor’s degrees incorporate all 10 of the required general education knowledge areas.

For Students Who Have Not Yet Submitted a Degree Program Proposal/Portfolio
If you have not yet submitted your degree program proposal and portfolio for review, you may work with your mentor to incorporate the revised general education requirement and plan your registration accordingly.

For Students with Degree Programs under Review or Concurred
If you have submitted your degree program for review or already have a concurred degree program, you may still take advantage of the more flexible new policy. Before contacting your mentor to discuss changes in your planned registration or in your overall program, review your program and answer the following questions.

If I revise my program to take advantage of the new general education policy:

  1. Will I continue to have a minimum of 30 credits in general education?
  2. Will I continue to meet the mathematics and basic communication
    requirements?
  3. Will I continue to meet the program requirements for:
    • advanced level credit (minimum of 45 credits)
    • liberal credits (96 for BA, 64 for BS, 32 for BPS)
    • area of study guidelines
    • total credits (128)

If you answer YES to all questions and you want to take advantage of the new general education requirements:
  1. Contact your mentor.
  2. Notify the Center Office of Academic Review via e-mail on the specific changes in your program (what are you removing and how are you replacing the credits).
