CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT)

Curricular practical training is a work experience that is an integral component of the student's course of study. This employment may be an internship, a cooperative education job, a practicum, or any other work experience that is either required for your degree or for which academic credit is awarded. The following conditions must be met before CPT can be approved:

  • The student's mentor has to verify that the work experience is an integral component of the program
  • The student has engaged in at least one full academic year of study
  • The student has already secured a placement and can provide that information for a specified amount of time

The student may choose to work part time or full time. The use of part-time CPT will not affect the student's eligibility for post-completion optional practical training (OPT) but full-time CPT will. The amount of time a student spends using full time CPT will reduce the amount of post-completion OPT that is available to the student.

In order to apply for CPT, the student must complete the CPT application and return it to the international student liaison (ISL) with the appropriate documentation.
