Practical training

There are two types of practical training that are available to Canadian border commuter students studying in the U.S.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is work experience that occurs as part of the degree itself. Students may work part time or full time as long as they have maintained F-1 status for a full academic year and the work experience is an integral part of the curriculum. It typically counts as academic credit.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is work experience in the student's field that typically occurs after the student has completed his or her studies. Students are eligible for 12 months of OPT and must apply for it 60-90 days prior to the completion of their studies. They may not apply for OPT after completion date.
