This course is designed for two primary purposes: 1) for students to learn about the many types of literary works for children (e.g., oral and written, historical and contemporary), their purpose and their audience, and 2) for students to learn how to read children's literature as literature, to analyze, critique, and evaluate quality in children's literature. Students will also read widely in different types of literature for children (e.g., fiction, non-fiction, poetry, picture books, young child through young adult literature). Although developing a broad and deep understanding of children's literature as a specialized classification of world literature is the main goal of this course, students will also investigate the ways in which literature may be used by educators, therapists, counselors, parents, and others whose professional practices involve children. Students who take the course at the upper level will be expected to propose and complete a final project involving original research or creative work.
Note: This course may not be repeated at the other level for credit.
This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Humanities.
