Course Description:

The focus of this course is not the process of social change, but rather its effects in the U.S., both positive and negative. In post-World War II America, we are healthier, more affluent, more comfortable and more free than perhaps in any society in history. But we are not happier. In fact, there is considerable nostalgia for "The Good Old Days." Whenever they were.

Students will look at the increasing differences in life changes between the upper twenty percent in American society and the other four-fifths; while at the same time, noting that most Americans live better than their parents. They just don't feel as though they do. Students will explore some of the reasons why the goalposts keep getting moved.

Note: this course presumes a basic understanding of the dynamics of social change. Although Social Change: Individual and Society, is not a prerequisite, it is strongly recommended. Most important is the ability of students to do advanced college-level work.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Social Sciences.
