Admissions
____________________________________________________________________________

What GPA do you require for admission?
There is no set grade-point average required for admission. Rather, applicants are reviewed on an individual basis to determine their ability to handle college-level work.

What are your application deadlines?
These are priority and not final deadlines. Students should apply in advance of these deadlines as to insure there is enough time to complete the application process, participate in an orientation, connect with a faculty mentor and proceed with registration. To be considered for entry into the Center for Distance Learning, you must apply by the priority deadline.

After I apply, how long will it take to be accepted and enrolled?
As long as you apply by the priority deadline, you will be considered for the upcoming term. If you apply after the deadline, you will be considered on a space available basis for the next term. Most students receive an admission decision within two to three weeks of completing the application process.

Credit Concerns
______________________________________________________________________

When will I know what credits are accepted?
In addition to transcript credit, there will be other potential credit sources that may need to be reviewed. In order to offer the most comprehensive review of all your credit, formal evaluations happen after you begin working with your faculty mentor. By working directly with your faculty mentor, and evaluating all of your learning together, you will develop a more accurate plan for how many and what credit (s) may be applied to your individual degree program. Credit is awarded oncey your degree plan is formally approved.

How many credits can I transfer?
A bachelor’s degree requires 128 credits, with at least 32 credits earned at Empire State College. A minimum of 45 advanced-level credits, with at least of 24 within your concentration, is also required.Students may transfer up to 96 credits for learning that occurred before enrolling.

What letter grade will you accept?
Empire State College will accept a letter grade of D (including D-) as part of a completed associate degree program (A.A., A.S. or A.A.S.). For all other transcript credit, a letter grade of C– or better is required.

Planning for your Degree

When do I make my schedule?
You may register for studies or courses after completing an orientation session (in person at a center or unit, and online for the Center for Distance Learning). Following the orientation, you will be connected with a faculty mentor who will guide you through the development of individualized studies, course selection and registration process.

How long will it take to get my degree?
On average students complete their degrees within two to five years. Whether you choose to study part-time or full-time, and how much credit you transfer, will affect how quickly you complete your degree.

Aid and Scholarships
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Is financial aid available?
More than 50 percent of students receive some form of financial aid. Empire State College follows SUNY tuition rates and students should apply for aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. New York state residents should also complete New York State Aid Applications.

Do you offer any transfer scholarships?
Empire State College grants need-based scholarships that are awarded through the financial aid process. All students are encouraged to explore outside scholarship opportunities whenever possible.
