Thank you for your interest in becoming a Center for Distance Learning peer tutor. The process of becoming a trained peer tutor should take approximately one week from start to finish, as long as all necessary documents are received and the online training activities are completed.

To become a peer tutor, please follow the steps below:

1. Review the following documents: Role of a Tutor, Role of a Tutee, General FAQs and Tutor FAQs.

2. Review the Peer Tutor Job Description, print, sign and mail to: Empire State College, Office of Academic Support, 113 West Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Attn: Theresa Vamvalis.

3. Complete the Peer Tutor Application and e-mail to CDLAcademic.Support@esc.edu or mail to Empire State College, Office of Academic Support, 113 West Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Attn: Theresa Vamvalis. An e-mail will be sent notifying all prospective peer tutors that their application has been received.

4. Prospective peer tutors must obtain a referral/approval from the instructor of the course in which they wish to tutor. Contact the instructor explaining you are looking to become a peer tutor and need their approval. E-mail the Instructor Referral/Approval Form to the instructor and request the completed form be sent directly to CDLAcademic.Support@esc.edu or mailed to: Empire State College, Office of Academic Support, 113 West Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Attn: Theresa Vamvalis. NOTE: Instructor contact information is available at www.esc.edu/directory. If you are unable to obtain a recommendation from an instructor because he/she is no longer with the college, please contact CDL's Office of Academic Support for alternative recommendation options.

5. Once CDL's Office of Academic Support has received all documents (signed Peer Tutor Job Description, Peer Tutor Application, and Instructor Referral/Approval Form) we will:

  • verify the prospective peer tutor received a B+ or higher in course;
  • verify the prospective peer tutor’s academic and student conduct standing record is in a good status;
  • contact referring instructor, if necessary, to clarify any information shown on referral form to be unclear or incomplete; and
  • e-mail the prospective peer tutor to inform them that they have been initially approved for the program and given access to complete the online peer tutor training.
6. Peer tutors eligible for federal work-study will be required to complete a Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FASFA) application. If…
  • a FAFSA is on file, the Financial Aid office will review and determine if the peer tutor meets the requirements for federal work-study.
  • a FAFSA is not on file, one must be completed at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Once the Financial Aid office receives the completed financial aid application, it will be reviewed and federal work-study eligibility will be determined.
  • the peer tutor does meet the federal work-study requirements, the Financial Aid office will send additional forms to be completed by peer tutor. All completed forms must be mailed to Empire State College, Office of Academic Support, 113 West Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, Attn: Theresa Vamvalis. Questions, please contact CDLAcademic.Support@esc.edu.
    Please note: Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits to be work-study eligible. Enrollments below 6 credits will make a student ineligible to receive this funding.
    7. All peer tutors must complete the online peer tutor training in its entirety.

    8. If the peer tutor is approved or denied, CDL's Office of Academic Support will:
    • notify the peer tutor that he/she has been approved/denied as a CDL peer tutor.
    • review requests for tutors and assign students to an approved peer tutor.
    • notify the peer tutor if no CDL students are currently in need of academic assistance and will keep the peer tutor on record for a future tutoring assignment.
    9. When a peer tutor receives a tutoring assignment, CDL's Office of Academic Support will require the completion of a Tutee Progress Report on a bi-weekly basis. The tutee’s progress report must be sent and acknowledged by the tutee. This report is especially important for those peer tutors receiving work-study payments. Peer tutors will also need to complete the Tutor Feedback Form.
